Area Zero Field Trip
Early in the week, Riegfried and Soy sent out a recorded video: an invitation for all guests on this Paldean vacation to join them on a little field trip into Area Zero within the Great Crater of Paldea. It is a spot known for fascinating explorers, academics, and seasoned battlers, however is generally off-limits due to the dangerous nature of the very powerful pokemon within. Which makes it the perfect place for a little study trip!
(They add that the trip was approved by the Paldea League, which is in charge of granting such access, but isn’t the idea of heeding the call of adventure no matter what more thrilling?)

Anyone interested in spending two days in Area Zero will be asked to gather in front of the Academy on the morning of the 9th, from where flying taxis will take everybody to the Gate Entrance. From there, warp panels bring you inside the crater, to the first of many research stations. While most of the space within is dedicated to computers and scientific equipment, the sleeping quarters have plenty of beds to accommodate you all overnight. You are also met here by several of the scientists stationed at this research station who have an offer for you. While you can just explore the area on your own, you could also contribute to the general body of knowledge and understanding and perhaps complete an assignment or two. Completely optional. Really. If you can resist five harried scientists giving you big Lillipup eyes. Outside the research station, Area Zero awaits. The grassy ground spirals down in a corkscrew pattern with occasional caves branching off. A wide river with rushing waterfalls cuts its own way through. Light sparkles off of crystal formations and gives a glittering appearance to the whole space, which is otherwise dimmed by a foggy mist. Area Zero lives up to its reputation when it comes to mystery, but as for danger? The Pokemon up here seem to be a little stronger than others encountered in Paldea, but all things considered, they hardly seem worth being warned about. But there is the sense of something more. Maybe you hear clicks and whirs coming from something unseen, or see a colorful glow that fades before you can reach it. You may simply be unable to shake the feeling you’re being watched. And even at the higher points of Area Zero, you may outright see the source of all this: Creatures that resemble familiar Pokemon, but behave like machines. Despite their appearance, the PokeGear recognizes them as true Pokemon. These Pokemon are reclusive until the trip leads to Area Zero’s depths, but within those underground caverns it’s a different story. More of the Pokemon there share that robotic quality than not. Some display aggression, some fear, and others curiosity. This is their home, and visitors from the outside world are so rare. How can they be sure what to expect? Anyway, have fun, be safe, and make sure you are back at the Research station at 10PM on the 10th. We are only allowed to leave 10% of participants behind! |

Jotaro Kujo | OTA
[Jotaro is like a fish in water in the research station. Despite his tall and muscular appearance, he thrives off books and studying. While the tools the scientists use are nothing like the sonars used for deep sea research or the water samplers, they're familiar enough for Jotaro to talk to them about.
Eventually, the team has him sorting out data in the lab. Jotaro pours over their existing notes and he's surprised that a trend comes up with the strange Pokemon down here. If he sees you around, he'll hail you down and gesture you to look at the profiles of the Paradox Pokemon the scientists have accumulated.]
How familiar are you with electric or psychic Pokemon?
----
Field notes
[Of course, the main thing that the scientists need are boots on the ground and Jotaro's more than happy to volunteer. He traverses the rolling grasses and sloped hills of Area Zero, his Palafin at his side. Right now, he's ducked down behind a rocky outcrop, staring intently at a bizarre bug. If he sees you, he'll gesture you to come over or outright have his Palafin grab you and drag you over so you're not seen.]
That's no bug. Know what that is?
[He says, of course, referring to the Iron Moth.]
----
Cavernous Brawl
[There are two things Jotaro is after down at Area Zero's depths. Nice locations for trail cameras and samples of the various rocks. Jotaro had assumed that finding a spot where trail cameras could get a good view of different varieties of Pokemon would be the hard part, especially with the limited knowledge of the area. However, the unmapped nature of the depths is the least of his worries. While he was getting one of the many crystal clusters, he had been attacked by a swarm of Glimmora. If that wasn't bad enough, the fighting had awoken something in the depths.
He wasn't prepared for the behemoth.
Unlike Iron Thorns, Iron Valiant does not avoid fights, nor does it play fair. And thus, while SP the Palafin is heroically fending off the Glimmora, Jotaro's Bisharp is struggling to block the relentless flurry of blows from cutting Jotaro's head off. Kosugi the Aurorus is shielding SP from Iron Valiant's attacks but it can't do much with the type disadvantage. He's just there to make sure SP doesn't get backstabbed.
Honestly, it's just a mess.]
Good grief, troublesome, aren't you? [Jotaro grunts as he dives out of the way, holding the crystals to his chest. Where he just stood, a Moonblast slams into the ground, having missed Chariot the Bisharp.
Uh... help?]
Cavernous Brawl
Oh.
Min-Gi had heard the sounds of a battle, and while his team is strong enough he wasn't too worried about intervening and seeing if anyone needed help, this isn't what he expected.
The Glimmora aren't too much of a problem. There are a lot of them, but Min-Gi owns one. He knows their weaknesses. It's an easy choice to send out his Gastrodon and Azumarill against them. The latter is a riskier choice, but there are so many of them. He can't send Doug out on his own.]
Make sure you're using special attacks on them. Don't trigger their ability.
[They're already on it with a Hydro Pump from Killer Queen and Earth Power from Doug. They probably don't need the reminder, but he normally takes more control if his battles. The only reason he isn't this time is the other, more pressing threat. He has no idea what to send out here. It looks steel, but so do seemingly all of them, and he's already learned that isn't always the case. It looks like a Gallade, so maybe it's still got psychic or fighting typing.
In the end he sends out Rodeo the Alolan Marowak and Red Eye the Corviknight.]
Red, try to pull it off him. Then Rodeo can use Flare Blitz.
[It seems irresponsible to try that while the Iron Valiant is still so focused on Jotaro.]

Research
[But! He is still someone who is more than glad to be helpful and move things where they need to be moved, or organize things so long as they're not too complicated. Anything that doesn't require a degree of any sort (especially from a man from a medieval fantasy world) is something he's glad to pitch in for. He's not doing anything too special, then, when Jotaro speaks up, and Dimitri immediately wanders over a little closer, Gremlin the Rattata on his shoulder.]
Electric and psychic type? I wouldn't say that I have a great deal of knowledge with electric types, although I do possess some companions of that nature... but I suppose, from firsthand experience, I know a good bit about psychic types, depending on the line of inquiry.
[Hm, maybe he should explain.]
My own psychic companions - mainly a Munna and an Indeedee - use their abilities to help me sleep at night, due to issues I have with the matter. In the years we have spent together, they have both learned to communicate telepathically to humans as well, and have functioned as translators when things are particularly difficult or complex between me and other types.
And since then, I have come to learn a bit more about them in turn. So if I can assist in any way...

Research Notes
Now Harry has been doing some minor intern tasks for some time when Jotaro calls out to him and asks if he is familiar to Psychic and Electric Pokémon. As fate has it, he is very familiar with these Pokémon types very well and some of his strongest Pokémon are either Psychic or Electric with Molly the Alolan Raichu being both.
He and said Raichu soon approach Jotaro and the former begins to look at the Paradox Pokémon profiles.)
It usually depends on which Pokémon line one has in mind but generally I’m well versed in both types by now that they can be very useful in many things.
For example, Psychic Pokémon, especially my Espeon, Alolan Raichu and some of my friend’s Pokémon, are highly valuable in helping me to sleep since I did have some struggles to sleep easy on some nights and they can help in translating things I might have struggles in understanding. They are so well trained to telepathically communicate with people as well.
Rai, Rai-Chu! Chu!
Electric Pokémon meanwhile are quite energetic in nature for the most part and they can be helpful in certain situations such as charging things on the go. But wild ones can use the electricity to defend themselves if provoked. From what I have read online, in Alola several Pikachu have been trained to help in generating electricity in the region. They can also use their tails to check out their surroundings through feeling the electricity in the area.

Cecil Harvey | OTA
[Cecil is, very frankly, not having a good time. Those random crystal growths on the surface have been stressing him out for weeks, and now there's even more of them? Between the incident ten (ten? already?) years ago and the dream-that-was-not-a-dream that plagues him still, he has plenty of reasons to worry.
Nevertheless, there is vital work to be done. As he walks towards the depths, he stops near various sparkling formations and takes the time to touch them. With his bare hands, with his clenched fist, with his Pokémon, with a large darkened gem he pulls out of his backpack, with both of his Mega Stones... Anything that could conceivably trigger a reaction. A reaction he very much does not want to trigger.
By the time he runs out of items to test, he turns to prayer, paying no attention to the Pokémon his Clefable, his Ursaluna, his Altaria, his Nidoqueen and one of his Aegislash fend off in the meantime.]
O crystals of this land, I beseech you. Respond to my will and do not awaken from your slumber.
The Depths
[The researchers want them to battle as many of those odd mechanical Pokémon as possible? Fine. Cecil can do that. He even has the perfect tool to do that.
Anyone who stumbles upon him deep within the caverns will find him practically submerged by wild Pokémon. Small ones, big ones, flesh and stone and metal alike. They keep throwing themselves at him, only to be beaten back by his limited team. Their aggressiveness is... almost unnatural, even by this place's standards.
Not that Cecil looks surprised or bothered by this. He's perfectly content to throw healing items at whichever of his Pokémon might need one, along with the occasional order. Perhaps he'd be willing to share his supplies with someone passing by?]

Violet Sabrewing | OTA
[ Collecting data, organizing it, processing it, sorting it? Why not just send up a choir of angels, cause this girl is in Heaven!!! At various points you can catch her typing rapidly on computers and jotting things down in a notebook... at the same time. Her expression doesn't change and she doesn't make a sound, but she's having a blast.
Perhaps too much of a blast - the longer you stay, the more you might realize she might have forgotten to eat and sleep. Why stop when there's so much to do? It might also take multiple tries for her to realize you're talking to her, if you want her to take a break.
Or you can watch her eventual collapse, whatever, I'm not the boss of you. ]
Out Of My Depths
[ So, there's a small problem with the actual excursion. Being a recent newcomer, Violet not only has just one Pokemon, but since they're just starting out, it's level five. Reminder that the lowest leveled 'mons in this area are twenty-five. So after it's too late to back out, the woefully under-leveled trainer finds herself in a lot of danger.
She and Loki the Espurr have taken to hiding behind a large rock, but that can only work for so long, especially with a lot of angry, territorial Pokemon prowling around. They'll need an escort to escape, but how to get "your" attention without drawing attention from the Pokemon? Why, have Loki use his psychic powers to gently launch a small pebble in your direction.
... Except the gentle launch winds up smacking you in the face.
At least Violet has the sense to look apologetic, mouthing "Sorry". ]

Why, that is practically just rogue homework and Riz loves homework.
(he's a nerd, ok)
It's near evening when Riz returns to the research station, a notebook full of observation, a gear bursting with battle data and a Flapple curled up around his shoulders and snoozing. He deposits his gear and notebook on a table next to Violet, and despite the fact that he looks a little grimy and his suit has some stains on it, he seems fairly chipper. [...Alright that sounds a little mean to say. However, while he's not been in the midst of an active war zone for some time, some habits never die. They especially don't die when you regularly train, sometimes with a human training partner and other times alongside one's own Pokemon.]
[When Felix comes back and hears he hasn't been on top of his training, Dimitri can only imagine the scolding he'll get.]
[So when he hears the sound of something whistling right in his direction, he ducks without even having to think twice on it, and the Rattata there on his shoulder squeaks indignantly. Blinking and befuddled, Dimitri looks around... and definitely sees the problem pretty quickly.]
Ah. Well, excuse me, Ma'm- [That's probably a Ma'm? listen he has one eye and he has to keep it focused on the Pokemon that are starting to turn on him and be antsy.] But please stay ducked down and hidden, or else this may prove to be a problem.
["This" is the Rattata which leaps downwards, sprinting off to be right in the middle of the large group of Pokemon gathered about. There's some varying noises about this tactic - surprised, aggravated, confused - but they don't last long.]
[This would be because of the Thunder Wave that the tiny little rat unleashes upon the whole group.]
[Dimitri waits a second just to make sure the sparks stay localized to their targets before he looks over to the group of rocks.]
Alright, you may want to hurry now.

Plus he's pretty sure Huey and Armin would stay down here forever being nerds if nobody's around to make sure they left with everyone else at the end of two days. But he's not taking chances, and brought along a team that's both powerful and reliable. He's trying his best to be prepared for whatever danger this trip throws at him!
A psychically-launched pebble hitting him between the eyes was not one of the dangers he'd counted on, though. When he sees the source was Loki, he can't even be surprised. Of course it was the Espurr. Of course.
He's not going to just leave Violet hiding there, not a chance... But if he could leave just Loki? He'd at least be tempted! But that's not an option, anyway, so Louie hurries over while the pokemon perched on his backpack keeps alert watch for attackers.]

Fluttershy | OTA
[ While Fluttershy is curious about the Pokemon in Area Zero, she isn't entirely comfortable with heading too far into it, especially deeper into the depths. So for the most part she can be seen around the research stations, helping out the scientists with observing the wild Pokemon and organizing the data being received. She's not much of researcher exactly, but when it comes to creatures she at least knows what she's doing. ]
Field Notes
[ Even though she's a bit frightened of heading into the depths of Area Zero, she's fairly comfortable hanging around the grassy areas immediately outside the research stations. As is typical for anyone who knows her, she's usually found surrounded by groups of Pokemon as she's seated in the grass, eagerly taking notes as she chats with them. ]
Oh is that so? I see...
[ Though for those who don't know her, it might be a bit of a sight. ]

Gobo Fraggle | OTA
[If there's one thing Gobo knows well, it's exploring. Everyone knows this, even if you've talked to him only briefly; getting to follow in his uncle's footsteps, getting to be brave, discover the unknown! So it should be no surprise that he all but leapt at the chance to plunge the depths of the crater and see just what was there, to go where few had tread before.
He was currently sitting on one of the beds, tightening the laces of his boots. Backpack was packed, all his best Pokemon were with him after reports that it could be dangerous down here- didn't want to go in unprepared, after all. Once he was done he stood up and shouldered his bag, then plucked out a Pokeball from a pocket. The eagle-eyed would see a few stickers on it, mostly purple and related to music. Moments later was a flash of light that materialized into a low-key Toxtricity.]
Alright Clef, you ready to go bud?
[Half-lidded stare and a long smack of tongue that apparently counted as an affirmative, because Gobo nodded and started walking. And apparently it was an affirmative, as Clef picks up as he passes her and follows in his wake.
Can't resist
putting off going out a little morechecking on other off-worlder trainers like him however, so whenever he passes someone, he stops to chat a moment.]Are you heading out there, yourself?
B. Spiral Path
[Gobo's paused pretty far down the pathways, looking like he's examining one of the large crystal formations. Clef is still standing with him, facing in the other direction and keeping watch, just in case. Either seeing the reflection in the crystal or at a sound from her, Gobo sees the approach of another trainer and turns.]
Hey! Holding up alright? [Then without waiting for an answer, he steps back from the crystal with arms wide.] This place is incredible! Awwh, coming here to Paldea was worth it just for this!
C. Depths
[Despite any precautions above, it was only natural that eventually Gobo would run into trouble. The sounds of fighting might've predicated it but even if no one saw that, it was hard to miss him hauling tail down the ledges, with a wheeling Iron Treads in hot pursuit, its lights flashing and making its trail glow midair like angry fire. Behind that is a moving track of disturbed earth, catching up fast to the Iron Treads.
Someone else can interrupt here themselves (C1) or failing that, as (C2) Gobo turns sharply and scrambles up onto a large crystal jutting out of a rock, the mound of dirt catches up and a Dugtrio erupts out of the ground in front of the Iron Treads, throwing it off its path with a sharp cry. The Pokemon turns to face it, ready for it to right itself; Gobo looks around frantically and catches the eye of whoever, ANY whoever, who might be close.]

And in the depths, things are indeed going terribly wrong. Killer robots aren't new to Louie - he knows Gyro Gearloose, after all - but no matter how many he's gone up against? Still terrifying! The "killer" part isn't exactly a concern with these Pokemon, but that only helps so much... Especially when they're this relentless. So, to avoid his team tiring out too fast - or just plain getting wiped out - Louie isn't rushing into battles.
That, and he's frightened to the point of hiding. He feels kind of bad about this reaction, which is a whole other weird thing, but he's still tucked away in a deep, rocky crevice. Not comfortable, but at least it's safe--
Until the ground starts to tremble, and Louie pokes his head out to see Gobo fighting a robotic Donphan with his Dugtrio. Keeping quiet and trying to stay hidden now is a bit much, but... Maybe he can still avoid fighting? He leans further out from his hiding spot and gives an urgent, whispered hiss of breath.]

Huey Duck | OTA
[Study? New areas? Sign him the HECK up!! Huey is going to be spending most of his early time here in that first station, talking with the scientists and sharing his own notes, or Out There making all new ones. If he heard that it was dangerous down here, well, he's got some good Pokemon for that! Otherwise he's just bouncing back and forth, a whirlwind of study and likely being a danger to himself and those around him. Someone help him.]
Look at this, look at this! [He's going to all but grab the arm of anyone nearby and drag them over to a... smudge? in the grass near the station. Even if they were inside at the time.] This footprint matches nothing in the Pokedex databases!
Isn't that exciting??
B. Pathway Caves
[Of course can't have study without going a little further than the station, so eventually Huey does set out on his own. At the moment he's crouched near the entrance to one of the caves shooting off the spiral path, swiping his fingertips through some of the dirt.]
Hmm, interesting... [He picks up a pinch and carefully rubs it back and forth through his fingers. Then licks one fingertip after a moment, rolling the taste back and forth over his tongue. He nods, apparently finding out something, then he stands and takes a swig from a jug of water at his waist. Swish, spit. With that done, he starts scribbling down in a field notebook.]
Interesting, very interesting...! [Said to anyone who happened to be within earshot, whether human or Pokemon.] The soil down here contains properties that none others have on the surface. [And he's back down again, this time pushing a little sample into a test tube.] I simply must know more, once we get back above!
C. Depths
[Pink and orange light flashes off the sides of the tunnel as an Iron Valiant spars with a Rapidash, blade to horn and hooves. The battle is fraught and by the sweat coming off the horse has lasted for a good while, but Huey is directing it well enough. Eventually the Iron Valiant is pushed back with a powerful kick, all but slammed into the wall; Huey wastes no time and throws a Dusk Ball. One shake. Two. Three. *Ding*]
Yes! [He goes over to retrieve it, pausing after to give a good long pat to Rapidash's head.] You did a good job Lex, you deserve a good long rest.
[Yet after recalling her there's a long whine- Oh it's coming from Huey. A bounce starts from his heels, goes up his body, his arms flap some and then-]
INCREDIBLE!
[A LEAP, then he starts furiously writing in his journal.]
Robotic Pokemon!! Even moreso than any that have ever been seen before, and many without the Steel type that has otherwise been seen in most other mechanical sorts!
[He's almost unable to write fast enough for his frenzied words.]
Oh, if only I could show Gyro. Or Fenton! Or B.O.Y.D.!! [Fond smile now, as he decisively puts a PERIOD in his writing.] They would really enjoy being able to check these Pokemon out.
[He paused, then snickered a bit.]
Well, maybe not Gyro. He'd want to take them apart...

You forget, Hubert, not all of us have memorized every single factor of the Pokedex just yet.
[ It'll happen, and soon, but even geniuses need time. That said, she will take a good look at the footprint herself, cupping her... dang it. It's hard to remember she no longer has a beak to cup. ]
A pity we don't have any crafting mold to create a suitable replica from this imprint. From what I can tell, this was quick movement, as if whatever was here didn't intend to stay long.

Research Notes
[Boober would have protested sooner if he'd been able to get a word in at all. He was trying to get back inside quickly! He has not been looking forward to this trip, even if his nerves weren't enough to stop him from going along once Riz decided to go. Sure, keeping him out of trouble wasn't that likely, but at least he could be here if something happened!
Boober only been outside because the sounds from all the computers and other science equipment in the research stations was stressful, but it hadn't been better out here! Not when he couldn't shake the feeling he was being watched. He'd rather deal with the machines, at least he knows what those are! Well, you know, in a basic sense.
He does at least glance at the footprint he's been dragged over to see, however briefly, before putting away the pokeball he'd already been holding.]
How can you even be sure that's a footprint at all?

It takes Heather about ten minutes to realize that she's not going to be able to keep up with any kind of group progress, and another twenty to accept it.
The reason for this has nothing to do with Heather herself... and everything to do with the Pokemon she decided to bring with her-- all of whom she'd chosen for both their battle prowess (extra-strong, possibly unknown wild Pokemon? Not the place for housepets) AND their reliability. Because this seems like a situation where good recall is a must.
As such? She has brought along Snitter. Because he's a good, good boy who USUALLY follows instructions to the letter (if, uh, not always the spirit). But for some reason, in this place....
"Are y-- ... can we be done?" she asks, on the verge of defeat.
Snitter is staring deeply into one of the crystals, his crest fully raised. He is mesmerized, and alternating between delicately tapping the crystal's surface with his beak, and bobbing his head up and down.
It's very cute, but it's also the fourth time he's ground their progress to a halt doing this. Her other Pokemon are milling around, bored, because they're not going to go running off without their trainer, but Snitter is too big to be moved and he is deaf to Heather's pleas.
B. STRANGERS LIKE ME
Given Snitter's... focus issues, it's probably unsurprising that Heather spends MOST of the day aboveground. It's probably not until at least 5 PM that she makes it down to the cave entrance. When it yawns open wide into view, however, she and her weird beetle-great-dane-griffin-thing end up experiencing a very different problem.
She's in the middle of breaking out some late-afternoon snacks and passing them out to her team when Snitter suddenly snaps to attention, neck extending to its full height and feathers bristling. And then, without so much as a squawk or a click, the Silphally takes off at an ungainly gallop.
"Wh-- SNITS! HEY!"
Cursing, Heather flings her bag back over her shoulder (scattering several granola bars and a few healing items in the process) and takes off after him at a woefully-inadequate sprint. They've already encountered some pretty imposing wild Pokemon at this point (part of the reason she'd wanted to make sure they all took a break), and caves are not somewhere she wants to lose track of a Pokemon in under even the best of circumstances.
What did he even see?!
Whatever it was, he only gains speed as he goes charging into the cave-- possibly straight past (OR OVER) other explorers in the process.
B
He has his Tropius with him. He'd been digging in one of the Pokemon's saddle bags when Snitter takes off and then so does Heather.
"...Well. C'mon, Fruitloops." He clips the bag closed and waves for the banana bearing dinosaur to follow him before he takes off after Heather at a stiff job.
"Heather! What is it?"
