Area Zero Field Trip
Early in the week, Riegfried and Soy sent out a recorded video: an invitation for all guests on this Paldean vacation to join them on a little field trip into Area Zero within the Great Crater of Paldea. It is a spot known for fascinating explorers, academics, and seasoned battlers, however is generally off-limits due to the dangerous nature of the very powerful pokemon within. Which makes it the perfect place for a little study trip!
(They add that the trip was approved by the Paldea League, which is in charge of granting such access, but isn’t the idea of heeding the call of adventure no matter what more thrilling?)

Anyone interested in spending two days in Area Zero will be asked to gather in front of the Academy on the morning of the 9th, from where flying taxis will take everybody to the Gate Entrance. From there, warp panels bring you inside the crater, to the first of many research stations. While most of the space within is dedicated to computers and scientific equipment, the sleeping quarters have plenty of beds to accommodate you all overnight. You are also met here by several of the scientists stationed at this research station who have an offer for you. While you can just explore the area on your own, you could also contribute to the general body of knowledge and understanding and perhaps complete an assignment or two. Completely optional. Really. If you can resist five harried scientists giving you big Lillipup eyes. Outside the research station, Area Zero awaits. The grassy ground spirals down in a corkscrew pattern with occasional caves branching off. A wide river with rushing waterfalls cuts its own way through. Light sparkles off of crystal formations and gives a glittering appearance to the whole space, which is otherwise dimmed by a foggy mist. Area Zero lives up to its reputation when it comes to mystery, but as for danger? The Pokemon up here seem to be a little stronger than others encountered in Paldea, but all things considered, they hardly seem worth being warned about. But there is the sense of something more. Maybe you hear clicks and whirs coming from something unseen, or see a colorful glow that fades before you can reach it. You may simply be unable to shake the feeling you’re being watched. And even at the higher points of Area Zero, you may outright see the source of all this: Creatures that resemble familiar Pokemon, but behave like machines. Despite their appearance, the PokeGear recognizes them as true Pokemon. These Pokemon are reclusive until the trip leads to Area Zero’s depths, but within those underground caverns it’s a different story. More of the Pokemon there share that robotic quality than not. Some display aggression, some fear, and others curiosity. This is their home, and visitors from the outside world are so rare. How can they be sure what to expect? Anyway, have fun, be safe, and make sure you are back at the Research station at 10PM on the 10th. We are only allowed to leave 10% of participants behind! |

Huey Duck | OTA
[Study? New areas? Sign him the HECK up!! Huey is going to be spending most of his early time here in that first station, talking with the scientists and sharing his own notes, or Out There making all new ones. If he heard that it was dangerous down here, well, he's got some good Pokemon for that! Otherwise he's just bouncing back and forth, a whirlwind of study and likely being a danger to himself and those around him. Someone help him.]
Look at this, look at this! [He's going to all but grab the arm of anyone nearby and drag them over to a... smudge? in the grass near the station. Even if they were inside at the time.] This footprint matches nothing in the Pokedex databases!
Isn't that exciting??
B. Pathway Caves
[Of course can't have study without going a little further than the station, so eventually Huey does set out on his own. At the moment he's crouched near the entrance to one of the caves shooting off the spiral path, swiping his fingertips through some of the dirt.]
Hmm, interesting... [He picks up a pinch and carefully rubs it back and forth through his fingers. Then licks one fingertip after a moment, rolling the taste back and forth over his tongue. He nods, apparently finding out something, then he stands and takes a swig from a jug of water at his waist. Swish, spit. With that done, he starts scribbling down in a field notebook.]
Interesting, very interesting...! [Said to anyone who happened to be within earshot, whether human or Pokemon.] The soil down here contains properties that none others have on the surface. [And he's back down again, this time pushing a little sample into a test tube.] I simply must know more, once we get back above!
C. Depths
[Pink and orange light flashes off the sides of the tunnel as an Iron Valiant spars with a Rapidash, blade to horn and hooves. The battle is fraught and by the sweat coming off the horse has lasted for a good while, but Huey is directing it well enough. Eventually the Iron Valiant is pushed back with a powerful kick, all but slammed into the wall; Huey wastes no time and throws a Dusk Ball. One shake. Two. Three. *Ding*]
Yes! [He goes over to retrieve it, pausing after to give a good long pat to Rapidash's head.] You did a good job Lex, you deserve a good long rest.
[Yet after recalling her there's a long whine- Oh it's coming from Huey. A bounce starts from his heels, goes up his body, his arms flap some and then-]
INCREDIBLE!
[A LEAP, then he starts furiously writing in his journal.]
Robotic Pokemon!! Even moreso than any that have ever been seen before, and many without the Steel type that has otherwise been seen in most other mechanical sorts!
[He's almost unable to write fast enough for his frenzied words.]
Oh, if only I could show Gyro. Or Fenton! Or B.O.Y.D.!! [Fond smile now, as he decisively puts a PERIOD in his writing.] They would really enjoy being able to check these Pokemon out.
[He paused, then snickered a bit.]
Well, maybe not Gyro. He'd want to take them apart...
D. Wildcard

You forget, Hubert, not all of us have memorized every single factor of the Pokedex just yet.
[ It'll happen, and soon, but even geniuses need time. That said, she will take a good look at the footprint herself, cupping her... dang it. It's hard to remember she no longer has a beak to cup. ]
A pity we don't have any crafting mold to create a suitable replica from this imprint. From what I can tell, this was quick movement, as if whatever was here didn't intend to stay long.
no subject
Then this is all the more valuable time spent, isn't it?
[-before the discussion of science takes over completely.]
You know, I wonder if the scientists here might have plaster or some other sort of useful medium for such a purpose? It'd be an oversight if not! [But in lieu of being able to actually plaster it, he settles for a good few photographs and a sketch on top of it, continuing to talk all the while.] I think you're correct about the apparent locomotion speed. To that end, it looks like it has an incredible stride length!
[He adds a few details to the sketch of the clearest print. Almost circular in shape, with the faint impression of a tread like might be expected more with shoes or armored boots rather than a Pokemon's footprint.]
It might be some kind of living object, not unknown to Pokemon. However, most of those tend to float such as through telekinesis or electromagnetic levitation. This one having feet of a sort alone makes it unique!
no subject
[ Time to jot! She nods along with his conclusions, before taking out one of her own notebooks and jotting down similar information. ]
If we take accurate measures of the footprint, it might give us a hint of its size and girth, given how much it would need to support on its feet... and from the looks of things, it does appear to be a two-legged creature. But if your theory is correct that it is one of the "living object" type of Pokemon, that begs the question of why it would have evolved to resemble a living creature instead of being an object that was possessed into life.
[ this is so awesome. this is so cool. she is so jazzed. this is the best day ever. yaaaaaaay. ]
no subject
Indeed! I do plan on plunging deeper, with any luck I'll encounter the Pokemon in question and study it first hand. The question of "object 'mons" are intriguing in and of themselves, such as the cases of Klefki, Klink, and Drifloon.
no subject
If my studies are correct, those are... A key ring, gears, and a balloon, right? I also think these are quite interesting, though it does give me cause to side-eye just about every ordinary object I see now, lest it suddenly spring forward to life.
no subject
Honestly, I find it all somewhat similar to the concept of tsukumogami, though- [A small chuckle] -without having to wait the 100 years first.
[He tapped his pencil against his chin.]
Well, for some cases only I'd suppose.
no subject
[ She goes back to her original page, twirling her pencil in her fingers back and forth. ]
A concept I can almost envy, that one.
no subject
You know, those are all excellent points. We can't at all assume that the rules here, including something akin to tsukumogami, would work the way it does in our world. We have to consider how Pokemon function, and how that would relate to what we're seeing.
[He glanced at her, and the scholarliness slips away for the moment.]
That being said, while "years" can certainly be skipped over rapidly, it's still not without their versions of growth and work; they still have to be nurtured throughout the levels they gain. It's not something better than what we have, it's just the way they do it.
You're doing just fine, Violet.
no subject
... My apologies, Hubert. I am used to being one of the most knowledgeable people in any given area, and now it's the exact opposite.
no subject
It's alright! I mean, we all have times like that, right? No matter how well read we are, there's always going to be situations where someone else's expertise can come in and help out.

Well, I've had some practice, helping take care of my brothers while we were growing up. And of course, let's not diminish the support of friends present, as well!
Research Notes
[Boober would have protested sooner if he'd been able to get a word in at all. He was trying to get back inside quickly! He has not been looking forward to this trip, even if his nerves weren't enough to stop him from going along once Riz decided to go. Sure, keeping him out of trouble wasn't that likely, but at least he could be here if something happened!
Boober only been outside because the sounds from all the computers and other science equipment in the research stations was stressful, but it hadn't been better out here! Not when he couldn't shake the feeling he was being watched. He'd rather deal with the machines, at least he knows what those are! Well, you know, in a basic sense.
He does at least glance at the footprint he's been dragged over to see, however briefly, before putting away the pokeball he'd already been holding.]
How can you even be sure that's a footprint at all?
no subject
Simple my friend, simple! Repetition. Look, if you look here and here, you can see where these footprints appear again and again in patterns consistent with a bipedal creature taking strides! They're very strange in appearance, almost as if someone went through on a large pair of stilts fashioned with armored boots-
[This is where he then looks up to Boober, seeing him this time. How many times had he seen that before, of the discomfort and outright fear of surroundings? He put away his PokeGear and held his hands out.]
Oh gosh, I am so sorry! I just got so excited seeing this unknown information out here!
[He doesn't even know who this is! Huey you just dragged a complete stranger out into Arceus knows what.]
no subject
...And okay, maybe he gets that way, too, but that's neither here nor there!
Boober does appreciate all of it, though he still breaks his silence with a huff.]
Well, for better or worse, I'm used to this sort of thing. [He shrugs, and his shoulders stay a little hunched up at the end, instead of fully dropping.] Not the unknown information part, just people being excited about dangerous things.
no subject
Well, without people getting excited about dangerous things, how would we ever find out about them? We'd just be crouched in the dark, afraid of going out into the unknown.
[He shook his head, putting his PokeGear away- under his hat, but away.]
I've been there before. It's not a good place to be.
no subject
[The sentiment there is something that Boober can't exactly deny by now, as much as he may want to. And he's here, himself, isn't he? Even though he thinks it's dangerous and - frankly - terrifying.
Then again, for him, it's not to find out anything about the unknown. It's because he cares about people who love doing that.]
But you always need someone to stay safe, I think. [A shrug.] Someone's got to be waiting back, for when exploring the unknown gets too dangerous and people need taking care of.
no subject
That's true! If everyone was out in the field, then nothing would get done. There's got to be people manning the home base, ready to receive the intrepid explorers upon their return.
I guess that's where you like to be, huh? Sorry again I just dragged you out like that. Things would literally stop moving if there weren't the hearth-and-heart caretakers.
