Area Zero Field Trip
Early in the week, Riegfried and Soy sent out a recorded video: an invitation for all guests on this Paldean vacation to join them on a little field trip into Area Zero within the Great Crater of Paldea. It is a spot known for fascinating explorers, academics, and seasoned battlers, however is generally off-limits due to the dangerous nature of the very powerful pokemon within. Which makes it the perfect place for a little study trip!
(They add that the trip was approved by the Paldea League, which is in charge of granting such access, but isn’t the idea of heeding the call of adventure no matter what more thrilling?)

Anyone interested in spending two days in Area Zero will be asked to gather in front of the Academy on the morning of the 9th, from where flying taxis will take everybody to the Gate Entrance. From there, warp panels bring you inside the crater, to the first of many research stations. While most of the space within is dedicated to computers and scientific equipment, the sleeping quarters have plenty of beds to accommodate you all overnight. You are also met here by several of the scientists stationed at this research station who have an offer for you. While you can just explore the area on your own, you could also contribute to the general body of knowledge and understanding and perhaps complete an assignment or two. Completely optional. Really. If you can resist five harried scientists giving you big Lillipup eyes. Outside the research station, Area Zero awaits. The grassy ground spirals down in a corkscrew pattern with occasional caves branching off. A wide river with rushing waterfalls cuts its own way through. Light sparkles off of crystal formations and gives a glittering appearance to the whole space, which is otherwise dimmed by a foggy mist. Area Zero lives up to its reputation when it comes to mystery, but as for danger? The Pokemon up here seem to be a little stronger than others encountered in Paldea, but all things considered, they hardly seem worth being warned about. But there is the sense of something more. Maybe you hear clicks and whirs coming from something unseen, or see a colorful glow that fades before you can reach it. You may simply be unable to shake the feeling you’re being watched. And even at the higher points of Area Zero, you may outright see the source of all this: Creatures that resemble familiar Pokemon, but behave like machines. Despite their appearance, the PokeGear recognizes them as true Pokemon. These Pokemon are reclusive until the trip leads to Area Zero’s depths, but within those underground caverns it’s a different story. More of the Pokemon there share that robotic quality than not. Some display aggression, some fear, and others curiosity. This is their home, and visitors from the outside world are so rare. How can they be sure what to expect? Anyway, have fun, be safe, and make sure you are back at the Research station at 10PM on the 10th. We are only allowed to leave 10% of participants behind! |

... Guess it can't be helped. If it doesn't fly off on its own, we're just going to have to overwhelm them.

[Doppio reaches into his bag for a Pokéball and sends out its inhabitant: a Cinderace who looks around curiously for a moment before Doppio quietly shushes her.]
Connie can cover that.
no subject
Okay. SP, hang back. If things go bad, you may have to jump in and try tank the discharge. [The Palafin does not look happy at the prospect but he understands the orders.]
Alright, let's take this punk out.
[Jotaro stands up and pitches his Pokeball at the beast.] Kosugi! Light Screen!
[Jotaro's Aurorus stretches out in all of his glory. Kosugi roars and sets up a wondrous wall of light. The Iron Moth screeches mechanically and crackles with electricity before releasing the Discharge. Some of the lightning bounces off the sceen but some hits Kosugi. But now's the time to strike, Doppio!]
no subject
The Iron Moth is the one Doppio's supposed to be keeping an eye on, though! He points Connie at it -]
Your turn, Connie! Pyro Ball!
no subject
This kind of research is basically fighting anyway. The Iron Moth is focused on the ancient Pokemon and is completely blindsided by Connie's attack. The blast will land but, to the surprise of those expecting a steel type Pokemon, it looks not nearly as effective as it should be. The Iron Moth bristles and spreads its 'wings', rotating them in the air. A giant sludge wave begins to emerge like a tidal wave, swamping the area.]
Kosugi! Move and then use Ancient Power!
[Unfortunately, Jotaro's Pokemon doesn't dodge the blast but Aurorus is thankfully not poisoned. Kosugi's eys glow with prehistoric power before it hurls rocks at the bug. The Iron Moth screeches in pain. It really didn't like that.]
no subject
The Sludge Wave hits Connie as well, though like the Aurorus, it seems like she isn't poisoned. Gah, he needs to think. Could it really be an Electric type after all...? Shit, does he really not have any counters for Electric Pokémon on him?!
On the bright side, if it ISN'T a Steel type, then Normal attacks should do just fine. In that case -]
Connie! Try Headbutt!
[She looks back, nods, and launches herself at the Iron Moth.]
no subject
Jotaro doesn't even get to order another Ancient Power. Connie hits the Iron Moth and sends it flying. If Connie was going all out then that poor thing is going careening over the edge into the pit of Area Zero.]
Oh... That was easy...
no subject
... Are you gonna have to go down there now?
[it's a little difficult to tell if Doppio looks apologetic or just plain afraid. Again, Jotaro is kind of intense; he isn't sure what to expect from him.]
I'm sorry but it's just Jojo
Jotaro walks over to the edge and follows the Pokemon's lead. He frowns at how far down they went down.] Well, they're not cause any trouble anymore... [He shakes his head and turns back to Doppio.]
Good grief. I'm gonna have to go after it if I want to research it, aren't I? [Jotaro returns his Aurorus.] Let's go already.
[Expect the unexpected. He's going to jump off the cliff after the Iron Moth.]
no subject
[He-- He said "Let's go." That means-- He was talking to him, right? He meant the two of them. He meant "Let's go, the two of us, that means you too."
Doppio's stunned silence only lasts a second or two. Then he recalls Connie and carefully starts climbing down, following Jotaro's lead.
(In the back of their mind, Diavolo wants to ask what in the world Doppio is doing, he really does. But if he tries to get his attention now -- if Doppio thinks he's getting a call... No. He can't afford to attract suspicion right now. It's no life or death matter, but the risks of speaking to Doppio at this very moment clearly outweigh the benefits. He'll just stay alert, as best he can.)]

Jotaro breaks his freefall by sending out Shred the Salamence. His new addition to the team isn't down for fighting but still helps Jotaro down to the ground, even though he tries to bite Jotaro's arm in the process. Thankfully, Jotaro returns him quickly before he can take a limb.
Jotaro's going to start the investigation. It's going to take some searching to find that knocked out Iron Moth... Area Zero is a big place and...]
I hope it didn't get knocked into the depths... [Jotaro says to himself as he glances at the deeper parts of Area Zero.]
no subject
[Hopeful, but not optimistic. God, he should have brought a Flying type with him - but his best one is Corvo, and, well, considering the number of criminal activities the shiny Honchkrow has been involved in, it probably wouldn't be wise to send it out in front of a civilian.]
no subject
Jotaro looks up to the cliffside they had just been on and holds his hand in front of his face. He does some mental calculations before he looks over to his Starter.]
SP, start scouting the area. I have a feeling it's around here somewhere.
Palafin!
[Jotaro's starter swims away from Doppio and Connie and starts searching for the Iron Moth on the floor they're on. It should be here and they shouldn't need a flying Pokemon
though holy shit shiny Honchkrow is a perfect Pokemon for Doppio safjlskdf. With any luck, they'll be able to find it on foot. Worst scenario, they can both ride Shred to get to the lower areas but hopefully they can avoid that. Jotaro doesn't feel safe flying on Shred alone due to the Pokemon's volatile nature, who knows how he'll react to a passenger.]... You've helped plenty. Let's just find this thing and I'll take care of the rest.
no subject
blushWell... At least he helped? Which, yes, he was under no obligation to do, but this guy strikes Doppio as the type of person towards whom it's important to make a good first impression. If not for most people, then for someone like him, who keeps his criminal proclivities as a closely-guarded secret.
Come to think of it, though, Doppio doesn't really know who he is, does he? He got the Palafin's name, but...]
Um, by the way... I don't think I got your name.
no subject
Jotaro turns properly to Doppio and tilts his hat up
and strikes a very normal JoJo pose.]My name is Jotaro Kujo. I'm a researcher... Though I suppose I am technically a Breeder in this world. And you are?
no subject
Vinegar Doppio. I'm a Trainer. [Yup! Very definitely a trainer! And no need to mention what he did back home.]
no subject
[Jotaro doesn't really care if Doppio doesn't share what he was back at home. And there's no reason not to think Doppio is a Trainer :)]
no subject
[Wow, maybe it's more common than he thought!!]
no subject
no subject
[Alright. He doesn't know where exactly to file that away, but... Neat??]
I never knew!
no subject
He doubts the Iron Moth would have gotten up since falling since Connie gave it a solid beating. So... if he follows the estimated angle... he should find it...]
West. [And off he goes. Sorry Doppio, he's just like this.]
no subject
Incidentally, Doppio isn't the greatest fan of small talk either... but he is wondering if he can get a little more insight into why Jotaro's name rings a bell. So...]
And, um, where would that be? I mean... Where are you from?
no subject
...more specifically, I'm Japanese but I live in Florida, America now.
[Who knows if that's helpful.]
no subject
[It does, however, let him know something else - something of limited importance, granted, but it's better than nothing!]
So you know Louie too! I mean, unless there's any other ducks...
