Area Zero Field Trip

Early in the week, Riegfried and Soy sent out a recorded video: an invitation for all guests on this Paldean vacation to join them on a little field trip into Area Zero within the Great Crater of Paldea. It is a spot known for fascinating explorers, academics, and seasoned battlers, however is generally off-limits due to the dangerous nature of the very powerful pokemon within. Which makes it the perfect place for a little study trip!

(They add that the trip was approved by the Paldea League, which is in charge of granting such access, but isn’t the idea of heeding the call of adventure no matter what more thrilling?)

Anyone interested in spending two days in Area Zero will be asked to gather in front of the Academy on the morning of the 9th, from where flying taxis will take everybody to the Gate Entrance. From there, warp panels bring you inside the crater, to the first of many research stations. While most of the space within is dedicated to computers and scientific equipment, the sleeping quarters have plenty of beds to accommodate you all overnight.

You are also met here by several of the scientists stationed at this research station who have an offer for you. While you can just explore the area on your own, you could also contribute to the general body of knowledge and understanding and perhaps complete an assignment or two.

Completely optional. Really. If you can resist five harried scientists giving you big Lillipup eyes.

Outside the research station, Area Zero awaits. The grassy ground spirals down in a corkscrew pattern with occasional caves branching off. A wide river with rushing waterfalls cuts its own way through. Light sparkles off of crystal formations and gives a glittering appearance to the whole space, which is otherwise dimmed by a foggy mist. Area Zero lives up to its reputation when it comes to mystery, but as for danger? The Pokemon up here seem to be a little stronger than others encountered in Paldea, but all things considered, they hardly seem worth being warned about.

But there is the sense of something more. Maybe you hear clicks and whirs coming from something unseen, or see a colorful glow that fades before you can reach it. You may simply be unable to shake the feeling you’re being watched.

And even at the higher points of Area Zero, you may outright see the source of all this: Creatures that resemble familiar Pokemon, but behave like machines. Despite their appearance, the PokeGear recognizes them as true Pokemon.

These Pokemon are reclusive until the trip leads to Area Zero’s depths, but within those underground caverns it’s a different story. More of the Pokemon there share that robotic quality than not. Some display aggression, some fear, and others curiosity. This is their home, and visitors from the outside world are so rare. How can they be sure what to expect?

Anyway, have fun, be safe, and make sure you are back at the Research station at 10PM on the 10th. We are only allowed to leave 10% of participants behind!

foolishwren: what if i just lost my shit the entirety of it (what if i just lost it)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-05-27 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's not long before it becomes clear that she has literally no chance of catching up with Snitter on foot, so she stumbles to a halt on the sandy incline leading up to the cave, breathing hard.

"Snits just... took off!" she wheezes, waving a hand behind her at Henry. "I couldn't get him to go twenty feet all day without him stopping to look at his reflection in something, and now he just shot off for the cave in a straight line."
no_ufo_ending: (this one is really dark but idc)

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-05-27 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Soon Henry and Fruitloops come gallumphing up behind her. Henry puts on the breaks and stops easily but his dino friend goes skidding several feet past them in the sand with a loud trumpet of alarm.

Henry puffs and looks toward the cave.

"He's weird but...that's not like him."
foolishwren: as i was, you shall be (Default)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-05-27 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Still panting, she just nods, eyes wide with combined incredulity and worry. Snitter is a bona fide freak of science but he doesn't just run wild. Until right this second, anyway.

"I can't even see him... argh, fuck."

She'd hastily returned the rest of her Pokemon to their balls in the interest of not leaving them behind, and she fumbles distractedly at her belt, trying to decide which one might be the most equipped for possibly tracking Snitter down in a freaking cavern.

"He must've seen something, but I dunno what...

Henry and Fruitloops exchange concerned glances before the reluctant receiver turns his full attention back on Heather. She's so worried. He's worried on her behalf. He isn't entirely convinced something bad would happen to the robo dog, but there was the threat of him getting lost in this mysterious place. They were only here for so long.

"We'll find him..."
foolishwren: .... for looking like goth lobsters (thank you scorpions....)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-05-27 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah..."

Heather shoots Henry (and Fruitloops) a grateful smile-- sometimes it seems like yesterday that the fellow survivor was determined to hide away from the entire world. She's happy to have him here with her, even if it's turning into a wild goose chase. Her bro. ;-;

"Hopefully he'll see his reflection somewhere and stop dead in his tracks like he's been doing all day..."

Finally deciding on Tricia, she releases the Manectric, who is still crunching confusedly on the milkbone she'd been handed a moment ago.

"Can you sniff out where Snits went, girl?"

An affirmative bark is Tricia's answer (once she swallows her snack, anyway).
no_ufo_ending: (boy needs some undereye cream)

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-05-27 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Henry nods. He stands back when Tricia appears to give her space to sniff out the other Pokemon.

"Sounds like she's on it," he says with a small reassuring smile, though he grows serious again. "Be careful...we don't know what's in that cave."
foolishwren: why aren't there ever like ghosts from 2007 who scream "IT'S BRITNEY BITCH" at 3 am (why are like all ghosts from the 1800s)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-05-27 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
The Manectric fortunately doesn't have a complicated path to follow... Snitter was on a mission and that mission did not zig-zag.

Heather, too, follows at a small distance.

"Yeeeeaah, I... wasn't even totally sold on heading in there..."

She was kind of tired, and she's NOT wild about caves... but now she doesn't exactly have a choice. :T

Letting out a gusty sigh, she reaches up to her front pocket to flip on her flashlight-- never goes anywhere without it!

"Did you bring a light? We might need it in there..."

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-05-27 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Henry nods and detaches a pokeball from his belt. In a brilliant red flash, a tiny candle with a face appears at Henry's feet. She's quick to drift ghostily up onto his shoulder.

"Boo? No sapping anyone's energy. It's too early for that."

The Litwick squeaks an answer and nods, one waxy hand pressed to her mouth as though she is keeping a secret.
foolishwren: we gotta go in the closet and beat the shit out of each other (time for 7 minutes in hell)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-05-27 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
--oh, that kind of light, huh?

Heather can't help but shoot the little candle Pokemon a dubious glance... she's never had a great track record with ghost-types. But... at this point, HENRY's the resident ghost expert. She can put on her big girl khakis and trust him. Hopefully.

Ahead of them, Tricia (thankfully her bright colors light her up like neon even in the comparative darkness) stops at the entrance to a side-tunnel and barks. Snitter went this way, guys!

"All right... eyes peeled, and maybe keep a battler at the ready too..."
no_ufo_ending: (lost kids)

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-05-27 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Boo catches that look, Heather, and she's just gonna bat her little innocent eyes at you. Henry motions for his Tropius to follow. Henry knows his Pokemon aren't the highest of levels, but he's confidant his flying banana dinosaur can get him out of a pinch if need be.

He cups a hand next to his mouth and calls into the darkness.

"Snitter!"
foolishwren: i was sitting there for a good five minutes going, “no. no. they wouldn’t have called a kids film ‘big fucking giant.’ would they? would they?” (I forgot what "BFG" stood for)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-05-27 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
SHE'S GOT HER EYE ON YOU, BOO. NO GHOSTY BUSINESS, GOT IT?!

Henry's voice booms down the tunnel, echoing hauntingly over their footsteps.

"Whoa. Wild acoustics in here," Heather comments quietly as they follow Tricia's lead down the dark tunnel... which opens up into a much brighter subchamber, one encrusted with gleaming opalescent surfaces that turn the space into a veritable funhouse of deceptive reflections.

Much to Heather's disappointment, Snitter is not parked in front of any of them, bobbling at his own reflection... but a faint, distant squawk echoes back at them from somewhere ahead.

"--that was him! ... I think!"

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-05-27 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah..." Henry says with a little awe.

It's been a very very long time since he was in a natural cave. He has to side with Snitter just a little. The crystals were really interesting to look at.

"Man...we've been in this world for so long now, but there's still new things to see."

He stops when he hears the far way cry.

"It sure sounded like Snitter..."
foolishwren: *i take a pen and make it say 69 69 69* *the wall bleeds a little more to say beneath it: "nice"* (*walls start bleeding and spell 666*)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-05-27 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
It really is true... this place isn't like anything else Heather's seen over the course of her years in this world, and that's saying something, because she's seen a lot.

And even outside of the cave, the atmosphere here in the crater was... unique.

Not quite creepy, but still somehow... alien.

The whirs and tinkles, both of sound and light... the entire place was dazzling and disorienting from top to bottom. Which made their current task more difficult than Heather liked.

"Hope Tricia can keep up with him..."

With all those mirrored surfaces, she has a feeling smell is going to be much more reliable than sight.
no_ufo_ending: (i killed a lot of giant babies today)

"I'm sure she can--being fast is her whole thing, isn't it? She's shaped like a lightning bolt..."

He tries to keep the vibe airy, but he's been listening to talks around the campus. It is Not Normal in here.

Boo is also enchanted by all the sparkling lights. Her flame reflects in purples and golds.
foolishwren: pedestrian, boring, you can do better. 2/10 (stores to cry in RATED: walmart)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-06-19 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, she's fast as hell, but this place is a little like a funhouse..."

Case in point, she pauses to frown at her own reflection in a tall, spindly crystal that kind of makes her look like some kind of horrible segmented insect. Suppressing a shudder, she moves on.

"And as pretty as it is, I'll be honest, I'm not like... wild about the vibe..."

The weird energy in the air that's given her goosebumps off and on throughout the day is harder to ignore in here.

There's another far-off squark, and Tricia WHFS, darting forwards-- but staying in view, stopping at each crystalline turn and barking over her shoulder at the humans to follow. NOT LOSING YOU TRAINERS IN HERE!
no_ufo_ending: (ah wanna hold your ha-a-a-a-and)

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-06-29 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Mn..." Henry concurred. Now that he was really focusing on it...the vibe is actually sort of, "Familiar."

A place out of space and time. Like something layered on top of the world. He walked a little more closely to Heather.

"Good girl, Tricia..."
foolishwren: But, Ugh, He's Actually Really Fucking Nice (Nation Wishes Area Man Were A Creep)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-06-30 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
She considers this for a second... and then nods.

Because yeah... it is familiar.

Even if it seems almost silly on the surface to compare this enchanting wonderland to the place she instantly knows he's talking about. Without bothering to be coy about it, she reaches out an arm and links it with his when he scoots closer.

"Here's hoping it's just good old-fashioned deja-vu."

The Manectric leads them on, through another few slightly-narrower corridors of the crystalline labyrinth, before the path opens back up once more into another ballroom-like wide space.

And... there in the middle.... could that be?!

Snitter is STANCED in the dead-center of the cave, the pale parts of him painted various rainbow pastels by the crystals all around. His crest is raised and he is looking STRAIGHT UP.
no_ufo_ending: (lost kids)

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-07-26 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Henry quietly appreciates the arm. He watches the colors reflect off his friend, his sister in...well sure as shit not Christ, but his sister in something bigger than them.

The world of crystal opens around them and Henry has to squint to make out the shape of Snitter in the center of the chamber.

"What's he looking at..."

Henry has a horrible terrible no good feeling that he's not going to like when he sees when he follows the Pokemon's gaze.
foolishwren: but then I'd have to go to super mega turbo hell for homos and i'm not quite out of my closet yet (well i COULD admit this is hot)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-07-30 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
The two survivors' heads angle upwards as one.

And sure enough, hovering about thirty feet upwards is... a Volcarona.

... No. Something that's intended to look like a Volcarona, but clearly isn't.

Three diamond-shaped metal pieces hover on either side of its body in the approximate shape of wings, quivering as they make hundreds of tiny adjustments, even though they clearly aren't what's keeping the thing airborne.

Flickering at the top of its shiny silver chassis are a pair of glowing, segmented orange eyes.

Eyes which had previously been focused on Snitter below, but which snap instantly to the two humans. ... And, uh. Turn yellow. From somewhere in the robotic body, a whirring alarm starts sounding.

Heather speaks first.

"Oh, shit."
no_ufo_ending: (what the hell?)

[personal profile] no_ufo_ending 2024-08-17 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
At first, Henry isn't sure what he's seeing. There are still many Pokemon he's not familiar with. But even he can tell that something is Up with this one. He almost feels like he's not supposed to be seeing it. It was from a different time.

His breath freezes in his throat as the rest of him goes still. His first response is to look as nonthreatening as possible.
foolishwren: God: 7 HOUR compilation video of you hitting curbs while driving (VERY FUNNY) (me when i die: hey god wassup bro lol)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2024-09-05 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There is definitely something Up with this one.

And Heather is getting some mild flashbacks to the first time she saw an Ultra Beast (which, for recap, was possibly the closest she's come in this world to feeling the same kind of dread she felt at entering the Otherworld. Which is to say... not close-close, but close enough to stand out.)

Which means, fortunately, that her instincts kick in.

Unlike Henry, Heather's first impulse is WEAPON.

"TRICIA, use Charge!"

The Manectric's spiky fur sparks, standing on end.

Meanwhile, the alarm emanating from the metallic moth's body carries on, now accompanied by the 'wings' flashing orange and white. A threat display. It hovers higher in the air, vibrating.

Thank God for Tricia.

Henry's own Pokemon are woefully underleveled for such a place, even Marlboro is only level forty. Boo cowers in his hair, her ghostly flame luckily not igniting it.

"Be careful..." Henry says...to who? Heather? Tricia? He doesn't have a blunt object in hand. He feels about as useful as a wet paper bag.
