Area Zero Field Trip

Early in the week, Riegfried and Soy sent out a recorded video: an invitation for all guests on this Paldean vacation to join them on a little field trip into Area Zero within the Great Crater of Paldea. It is a spot known for fascinating explorers, academics, and seasoned battlers, however is generally off-limits due to the dangerous nature of the very powerful pokemon within. Which makes it the perfect place for a little study trip!

(They add that the trip was approved by the Paldea League, which is in charge of granting such access, but isn’t the idea of heeding the call of adventure no matter what more thrilling?)

Anyone interested in spending two days in Area Zero will be asked to gather in front of the Academy on the morning of the 9th, from where flying taxis will take everybody to the Gate Entrance. From there, warp panels bring you inside the crater, to the first of many research stations. While most of the space within is dedicated to computers and scientific equipment, the sleeping quarters have plenty of beds to accommodate you all overnight.

You are also met here by several of the scientists stationed at this research station who have an offer for you. While you can just explore the area on your own, you could also contribute to the general body of knowledge and understanding and perhaps complete an assignment or two.

Completely optional. Really. If you can resist five harried scientists giving you big Lillipup eyes.

Outside the research station, Area Zero awaits. The grassy ground spirals down in a corkscrew pattern with occasional caves branching off. A wide river with rushing waterfalls cuts its own way through. Light sparkles off of crystal formations and gives a glittering appearance to the whole space, which is otherwise dimmed by a foggy mist. Area Zero lives up to its reputation when it comes to mystery, but as for danger? The Pokemon up here seem to be a little stronger than others encountered in Paldea, but all things considered, they hardly seem worth being warned about.

But there is the sense of something more. Maybe you hear clicks and whirs coming from something unseen, or see a colorful glow that fades before you can reach it. You may simply be unable to shake the feeling you’re being watched.

And even at the higher points of Area Zero, you may outright see the source of all this: Creatures that resemble familiar Pokemon, but behave like machines. Despite their appearance, the PokeGear recognizes them as true Pokemon.

These Pokemon are reclusive until the trip leads to Area Zero’s depths, but within those underground caverns it’s a different story. More of the Pokemon there share that robotic quality than not. Some display aggression, some fear, and others curiosity. This is their home, and visitors from the outside world are so rare. How can they be sure what to expect?

Anyway, have fun, be safe, and make sure you are back at the Research station at 10PM on the 10th. We are only allowed to leave 10% of participants behind!

[He watches this with an amused sort of confusion, unable to quite figure out entirely why she's doing what she's doing. He figures it's gotta be trying to find information, but he can't imagine how her actions would lead to what information in the first place. Still, it's neat! And that enthusiasm is definitely matched.]

Aw yeah, I feel the same way! This place is almost like home, but totally different, too. It's incredible!

So, what were you doing there anyway, eh?

I was conducting several observations in order to enhance any learning opportunities about this crystal. For example, the reason I am laying down in the dirt at this angle is to get a better look at how it has emerged from the ground and what effect it has had on the soil itself.

[ also don't mind Espurr who is now right behind Gobo and giving him the ol o_o ]

Oh! [And he bent over with hands on knees, tilting his head down and around as if trying to get the same look himself, if he'd even know what it meant.] You know, I never thought about that kinda thing. That how a crystal comes out of the ground could tell you somethin' about it.

There's plenty you can learn from simple observation. I would be delighted to share my knowledge with you, even if I'm only slowly learning about this entire world myself to start with. As much as I'd like to believe my skills are telling me all I need to know, the sheer concept of magic in this world is disputing that right from the get-go.

[ She reaches out to pick up a bit of dirt from the bottom of the crystal, rubs it between her fingers, then places it between the pages of her book. ]

[He continued watching this curiously, tilting his head a bit after a moment.]

Yeah, I know whatcha mean! It's been one long learning process for me too, including about the magic. It's so different here than what I'm used to back home.

[He grinned as he looked up at the crystal, idly sweeping a hand back through his hair.]

But man, what I would've given to even know this whole world existed in the first place! It's beyond anything I'd ever dreamed, that my uncle had even explored in the first place, and no matter what I just can't get enough!

... Your uncle is an explorer.

[ A distracted state of fact. She actually pauses in her studies, amused by something. ]

I'm not one to really believe in things like coincidences and fate, but I have to say, these shared circumstances are very entertaining.

[Okay THAT gets his attention. He looked back at her, laughing softly.]

Yeah? Whaddya mean? You have an uncle explorer, too?

Not quite - my dearest and best friends have one. In fact, if not for him, I never would have met those friends, nor would I have gained an amazing sibling.

Ohh, well that's pretty cool! It's kinda funny what little random happenstance can lead to, isn't it?

Indeed. I am not one to believe in fate... but if some higher power had arranged that meeting, I can only hope to thank them personally someday.
gobetween: (So that's Plan G. What do you think?)

[personal profile] gobetween 2024-06-13 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well I don't know much about higher powers of any sort, but I do know how special it feels when everything like that just falls into place before you know it. Especially if it was something you never imagined you'd be a part of in the first place.

Like here! Not that- I knew it existed before waking up here. [He snickered softly.] But if I had, I don't think I would've ever guessed that I'd get to be here, or meet all the different Pokemon.
