Log:

As night falls on the final day of an excellent beach prom adventure, the staff of Resort Gorgeous usher their guests out onto the beach for one last grand sight to top off the experience. Big, fluffy resort towels have been laid out for people and Pokemon alike to sit on, and locals are off to the sides, handling large and beautiful kites with incredible care. They come in all shapes and sizes, and each depicts a Pokemon you may have seen wandering the shores or swimming in the oceans during your time here. They're incredible works of art all on their own, and as the wind picks up, watching them lift off into the sky becomes an artistic experience in and of itself.

A hush falls over the gathered audience as the kites sail up, up, up into the sky. Small children begin to release lanterns that float up to join them, and the kites dance around them in practiced loops and twirls. In turn, they are illuminated from all angles, a play of shadow and color in the dark, starry night.

But as the show goes on, it starts to become apparent that starlight and lanterns... are not the only things lighting up the night sky.

A growing point of electric blue light that might have been overlooked at first among the rest of the stars becomes brighter and brighter, and bigger and bigger, quickly becoming what is clearly a long and jagged tunnel opening up in the middle of the sky over the island, accompanied by a sound like a clap of thunder.

There's barely enough time to react to the opening of space before, like bees from a hive, ghostly white creatures emerge, at least two dozen of them, drifting serenely down in the direction of the beach-- and, unfortunately, right towards the show, even as the locals gasp in shock and try to pull their kites in.

"What in the world is that?" one person cries out.

"Where did they come from?" shouts another.

But the biggest, most obvious reactions come from the wild Pokemon in the area.

Frightened Wingull take off in enormous clouds from their cliffside nests and scatter to the winds, the sea grows choppy with fish Pokemon of all kinds poking out from the waves to examine the bright light only to splash hurriedly back down, and even the Pyukumuku try to roll themselves back into the ocean, expelling their innards to help pull them across the sand. The landbound wild Pokemon don’t have the ocean or the sky to retreat to, and begin to swarm and stampede in their efforts to either find somewhere to get away from the strange, unnerving creatures...or stand their ground and attempt to fight them. The reaction from the wild Pokemon is so strong, in fact, that the strange creatures seem to panic themselves, jittering this way and that, only for some to get tangled in the strings of the retreating kites. Once ensnared, they start to emit an unsettling cry as they struggle to get free, lashing out with their tentacles at anything that comes near as they come tumbling slowly through the air towards the ground.

It’s chaos on the beach. Some locals try to yank their kites free, or send out their own Pokemon to try and defend themselves. Others run, scooping up children and Pokemon and yelling for others to do the same. Wild Pokemon are flapping and scampering everywhere, so panicky that they’re having a hard time telling friend from foe. The strange creatures are floating all around, lost and fighting with trained and wild Pokemon alike. But the question is...what will you do?

A wild Nihilego appeared!

Grunkle McGucket.

It's that part that pulls Fiddleford back to the present. He's only just started getting used to being called family by the Pines twins, and he's not been anyone's great-uncle before. Hearing it grounds him in his more recently-formed memories. Good memories. He's not in Gravity Falls. He's in Pokemon Hawaii, traveling with his--his honorary family, and what he's remembering is far away and long ago. Over.

He's still scared. He is right and truly terrified of the creature he remembers seeing. He stares at Dipper with wide eyes, unable to control his hyperventilation and trembling hands, but he does come round to focus.

"How d'you know?" he asks, gripping Dipper by both his shoulders and staring him in the face. "This is it! This is the memory I built the gun for! This is what I tore my brain to smitheroons tryin' to forget! What if I still can't live with it rattlin' around my head? How d'you know I ain't gonna lose it -- lose it all over again?! I can't -- I can't do it again, Dipper!"

He doesn't want to go back to square one. He doesn't want to lose the memories he's made here. He wants to remember Jean. He wants to remember Wrath. He wants to remember Sasha and Yurio and Harry. He wants to remember Buddy, and Berry, and Miracle. He wants to remember coming to get Dipper and Mabel in the Pidgeytron. He wants to remember what Ford told him. He wants to keep the memories he's gotten back of his family, of the old farm. He wants to remember it all.

He looks at Dipper, miserably, and says, more quietly:

"I--I don't wanna forget you."

Dipper gets that. He's been through Weirdmageddon. He's seen some of the horror that Bill can create even if he doesn't know exactly what McGucket saw on the other side of the portal.

So he just looks at McGucket back in eyes.

"You're not going to forget me! And I know you're not going to lose it all over again. Because I saw you at home. I saw you help us fight back against Bill and that hasn't happened for you yet. You helped save everyone from stuff from that portal. And if you could live through that madness and keep your sanity still....then nothing is going to break it again. Nothing.

So I know that you can pull your memories back together. Yeah, it's going to be hard but you can do that here too. And we're going to be here for you. Because you're part of the family now...and we stick together."

McGucket's eyes go round. He hears you, Dipper: your voice is louder than the ones in his head, in his past.

The Pines think of him like family. He's part of this. He's part of a family that can do just about anything they put their mind to. He's seen it happen time and again. No matter what the odds are, when they're together, they can't be stopped.

He gets to have that, be that. He actually does. Fiddleford McGucket isn't alone anymore, like he's been for half a lifetime. They're here for him, even if it's hard, and he'd do just about anything for them in return.

His face softens; he smiles. Fiddleford's head still hurts, still clamors noisily, but he's gotten good at ignoring it over the years, and he can put this away, too, at least for now.

"Well, if I've already done it somewhere, I must be able to do it again!" Fiddleford says, brightening. He squeezes Dipper's shoulder, then decides you know what, he's a crazy old man, what the heck. He throws his arms round Dipper's shoulders for a quick but sincere hug. "Come on," he says, pulling back. "They might not be the same thing as I remember, but they're still makin' a ruckus! We got us some invadin' space squids to wrangle!"

They've got a job to do. Having that to focus on, having a crisis to deal with, makes it easier for Fiddleford to pull his mind above the noise, keep his head above the water. He can hold himself together. He's got this.

McGucket pulls out a Pokeball -- Berry's. "Heh heh! Rise and shine, Berry-gon, I got a job for you! We got ourselves some critters from another world, and they're invadifyin' our planet! They're makin' a real mess! Think you can handle it?"

A flash of light arcs from the Pokeball, and the Porygon appears. Her edges are dull, her sides have lost their sheen. She doesn't look healthy. But she raises her tired eyes and looks at the incoming Nihilegos, and light comes back into them. It's kind of a fevered light, but it's still more alive than she's looked in months. She throws her head back and howls an electrical whirring cry: oh, hell yes. Let her at them. She was born ready.

Hugged back! Sorry part of the family now.

Which also means.

"We can totally do this! I'm going to go grab Mabel. We're better as a team and I promised her we'd face things together from now on. I'll get her and bring her over."

He's worried about Mabel....there's chaos right now and if the near end of the world taught him anything it was that he and Mabel could do almost anything when they worked together.

Fiddleford nods. "Go find your sister," he says. Then, he reaches into the inside pockets of his coat and starts bringing out...components. Metal rods. Straps. Fuel tubes. An altimeter.

"In the meantime, I'm gonna put this contraptimathing together! Thought I could use it to make a ruckus, and maybe do some sightseeing before we left. I had no idea it'd come in useful like this!"

It's a rocket pack. Not a Team Rocket pack. A literal rocket pack. It's skeletal, collapsible, and looks very unsafe, but pffff, inventing a safe jetpack IS impossible.

"You're the best at those."

Grunkle McGucket might have no memory of the shack robot they all built thanks to him but Dipper does. He's pretty sure McGucket's got this.

"Good luck! I'll be back with Mabel as soon as I find her."

He's still not used to this kind of--of immediate belief. It's like faith in him comes as natural as breathing and walking backwards for the Pines kids, and it makes Fiddleford feel like he could do pretty much anything if it meant not letting them down.

The alarms in his head are quieter now. They're still there, but they matter less.

Fiddleford laughs. It's probably weird to feel joyful in a situation like this, but weird has been normal for too dang long for him to care.

"Go on then, git! Don't let the space squids getcha! Heh heh!"
