AN EXCITING END TO THE DAY
Who: Everyone participating in the extra Prom event!
Where: The beach on the south part of the island, and nearby surroundings
When: Sunday, April 15th (night)
Summary: A special kite-flying sendoff goes awry.
Rating: PG-13, most likely
Log:
As night falls on the final day of an excellent beach prom adventure, the staff of Resort Gorgeous usher their guests out onto the beach for one last grand sight to top off the experience. Big, fluffy resort towels have been laid out for people and Pokemon alike to sit on, and locals are off to the sides, handling large and beautiful kites with incredible care. They come in all shapes and sizes, and each depicts a Pokemon you may have seen wandering the shores or swimming in the oceans during your time here. They're incredible works of art all on their own, and as the wind picks up, watching them lift off into the sky becomes an artistic experience in and of itself.
A hush falls over the gathered audience as the kites sail up, up, up into the sky. Small children begin to release lanterns that float up to join them, and the kites dance around them in practiced loops and twirls. In turn, they are illuminated from all angles, a play of shadow and color in the dark, starry night.
But as the show goes on, it starts to become apparent that starlight and lanterns... are not the only things lighting up the night sky.
A growing point of electric blue light that might have been overlooked at first among the rest of the stars becomes brighter and brighter, and bigger and bigger, quickly becoming what is clearly a long and jagged tunnel opening up in the middle of the sky over the island, accompanied by a sound like a clap of thunder.
There's barely enough time to react to the opening of space before, like bees from a hive, ghostly white creatures emerge, at least two dozen of them, drifting serenely down in the direction of the beach-- and, unfortunately, right towards the show, even as the locals gasp in shock and try to pull their kites in.
"What in the world is that?" one person cries out.
"Where did they come from?" shouts another.
But the biggest, most obvious reactions come from the wild Pokemon in the area.
Frightened Wingull take off in enormous clouds from their cliffside nests and scatter to the winds, the sea grows choppy with fish Pokemon of all kinds poking out from the waves to examine the bright light only to splash hurriedly back down, and even the Pyukumuku try to roll themselves back into the ocean, expelling their innards to help pull them across the sand. The landbound wild Pokemon don’t have the ocean or the sky to retreat to, and begin to swarm and stampede in their efforts to either find somewhere to get away from the strange, unnerving creatures...or stand their ground and attempt to fight them. The reaction from the wild Pokemon is so strong, in fact, that the strange creatures seem to panic themselves, jittering this way and that, only for some to get tangled in the strings of the retreating kites. Once ensnared, they start to emit an unsettling cry as they struggle to get free, lashing out with their tentacles at anything that comes near as they come tumbling slowly through the air towards the ground.
It’s chaos on the beach. Some locals try to yank their kites free, or send out their own Pokemon to try and defend themselves. Others run, scooping up children and Pokemon and yelling for others to do the same. Wild Pokemon are flapping and scampering everywhere, so panicky that they’re having a hard time telling friend from foe. The strange creatures are floating all around, lost and fighting with trained and wild Pokemon alike. But the question is...what will you do?

A wild Nihilego appeared!

OTA
I knew it wasn't just a Frillish in bad lighting! [He has never felt more vindicated in his life. Finally, more people than just the other Legend Seekers members will believe him.
The one he saw before was also a lot less, uh... in distress? It sure didn't give him the same feeling of unease, but there's more of them this time and he's never liked feeling outnumbered. He didn't teach himself to straight-up shut off his fear response for no reason, though. Fighting unknown creatures from another dimension is kind of his bread and butter. He pulls USS Cyclops' ball from the strap across his chest. It's the best choice here: if it can just Wrap one of them it can probably incapacitate it without it being able to do much damage to anything else. It's also got nerves of fucking steel and will probably be able to handle that kind of close quarters. Probably. It's some wet algae piloting scavenged nautical detritus, it'll be fine. It emerges with a rumble that starts out theatrical and turns almost surprised when it takes in the scene. The fuck is happening. The fuck is this, the fuck are those?]
Don't panic. Use Wrap on that one there--
[USS Cyclops dutifully reaches out and grabs one of the Nihilego before it can get tangled in a kite string. Both Pokémon (if that IS a Pokémon) are clearly unhappy with this arrangement, but them's the breaks. It starts to pull the alien squid in, though not without a good degree of struggle. It's a bit like reeling in a particularly stubborn fish, if a fish flew through the air and was giving off a deep and abiding sense of tangible dread. If anyone else wants to help bring this thing down safely to where it might be able to be knocked out or reasoned with, get in there!]
hey there friend
The creatures are fascinating and Newt really wants to get closer to one if he can at some point but right now the focus is trying to keep the situation from getting any worse than it already is. People are panicked, he's fairly certain these strange creatures are a bit panicked and maybe even just a bit confused about why they're here, and, well, there's a lot of kites in the air that are going to make things much worse as the beasts start moving closer.
Seeing Ford and USS Cyclops attempting to draw one of the beasts down to the ground, Newt looks to the Noivern beside him and nods upwards.]
Salazar, see if you can help get that thing down.
[The Noivern's ears twitch and he nods, letting out a low series of clicks before he launches himself into the air. He flies up and swings around to the other side of the beast, hovering mid-air with his back to it and using Gust to push more of the kites away and clear more space so there's less for the beast to try and grasp.
Now Newt looks to the Nosepass beside his legs, resting a hand on Samuel's head.]
Focus a Thunderwave on the beast, if you would Samuel?
[Toddling back and forth, the Nosepass does just that, sending out the attack to try and quell the beast's fighting.
Hopefully.]
hey buuuuuuuuuuddy
The Thunder Wave helps... a little. It doesn't stop the Nihilego from struggling entirely even if it does slow the squid down somewhat, and USS Cyclops still finds itself struggling. It's starting to feel the damage that such close quarters is slowly giving it.]
Use Giga Drain. Keep your health up.
[It's easy at least with Cyclops' tendrils already wrapped all around the squid. It's something. The Nihilego slowly, slowly descends toward the sand.]
That was good thinking, moving the kites. [The fewer variables they have to deal with, the better.]
no subject
The wizard frowns a bit, in worry more than anything else, as he watches USS Cyclops continues to struggle a bit. He pulls a Pokeball from his coat and tosses it, a Deerling appearing bucking and kicking--ready for a fight.]
Basil, use Leech Seed! See if you can help wear it down just a bit more and make it easier for our friend there.
[Basil digs at the sand and tosses his little head, using the attack to plant a seed on the Nihilego with a fierce--as fierce as a Deerling can get mind you--cry.]
Given those limbs, the less it has to grasp the better. [Newt glances to Ford with the same worried frown.] What are these things? I've never seen them before.
no subject
I have. Once, very briefly, from a distance. There was only one, and I didn't see any tear in the sky. It may have been an early scout; at any rate it seemed curious more than aggressive. These seem similar. You'll note they're more reactive than anything else. If they were here to actually cause harm they would be more organized and direct about it.
no subject
Yes they do seem to be more confused than anything else, which would explain why the kites, for one, have been tripping them up. [He's definitely on the same page as you, Ford.] It's almost as if they're blind to their surroundings...
[Wait. Newt looked towards the beast then towards the portal.]
Perhaps whatever they use to navigate terrain where they come from isn't quite as strong here--maybe that's causing them to be disoriented and seem aggressive?
no subject
[It kind of stopped being a thing for him pretty early on, but he hasn't forgotten what it felt like to be young and inexperienced and desperately trying to wrap your head around something you can barely comprehend. That can happen to space squid just as much as it can happen to young idiots from New Jersey.]
We can't know unless we ask, but they don't seem interested in talking.
no subject
The shout comes from above. Berry the Porygon has used Magnet Rise, and Fiddleford McGucket has used the collapsible jetpack he brought for sightseeing. He's got a kite string he's swinging like a lasso. Between the two of them, they are herding two space squids back into the air, and this is shouted from about twenty feet up as the two of them zoom by.
"Soon as we're done wrangling these flyin' space-alopods, you and I are goin' to have words, Ford!"
that dank wildcard
That is, until the sky opened up and Things started coming out of it. Like a switch, Elsa goes from vacation mode to GO mode. Thank you Starmiebucks and also a lifetime of always being in that mode.
She immediately releases Skadi and sets off to look for everyone.
As it so happens, Ford is the first person she finds. Her eyes widen when she realizes he's absolutely being swarmed by the the things. If something like this had happened when she first arrived, she wouldn't know what to do or how to save him. But not now.]
Skadi, return! [In a burst of red, Skadi is gone and Elsa throws another ball. In Skadi's place is a big, green, round boy.
Hnoss the shiny Dragonite is on the scene.]
You know what to do!
[Boy does he! He's very protective of Elsa and that extends to people she cares about. So of course he wastes no time in nyooming into the air and heading straight for that writhing swarm of Nihilego. With grace, agility, charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent, he flies to Ford's aid.
And he does a pluck.]
no subject
Things are not looking dire, exactly, but they are looking very inconvenient by the time Hnoss plucks him up out of the midst of the squid. He struggles for a moment before he registers exactly whose grip he's in, and then he mostly just gets grumpy.]
I was doing fine! I could have taken them!
[Without a weapon? Were you just gonna punch the alien squids?
I mean. Yes. That was his plan. He's punched his way out of worse alien attacks, he was doing just fine, nevermind he has a history of playing the damsel in distress more than the action hero. Really it's incredibly appropriate he's being carried off by a dragon right now.]
no subject
Once at a close enough distance to Elsa, Hnoss hovers above the ground a few feet and just sort of plops Ford in front of her a bit unceremoniously. Once that's over with, he flies up and then around, thudding down on the ground behind Elsa, looming protectively and trying not to chuckle in Ford's direction.
He's failing. Elsa is oblivious to everything as she steps over to Ford.]
Are you okay? Did they hurt you?
no subject
[Ford pushes himself to his feet, brushing sand from his coat. He takes in the scene of the battle from this angle. Trainers getting civilians to safety, Pokémon running hither and thither, that same group of Nihilego floating stubbornly in their direction--
Wait.]
They are very dedicated, I'll give them that.
no subject
She turns back to Ford, placing a hand on his arm. It makes her feel better, to have that contact. To non-verbally show that she's a little nervous. She won't say it out loud, nor will she let it control her. She's putting on her bravest of faces for what feels like a serious fight.]
Do you know these creatures? [Considering all the universe hopping he's done, she's curious to know if he's had experience with these things.] Or did you just make them angry somehow? [Also something she wouldn't be surprised by.
Hnoss nyooms into the air, getting antsy with how close they're getting, ready to attack at a moments notice.]
On second thought, lets talk later; they're getting uncomfortably close. Who do you plan on using?
no subject
[He is kind of wondering if this is partially his fault. There was that one he saw all those months ago, but all he did was take a few blurry pictures of it. Unless that got it mad? It hadn't seemed upset at the time.
He considers her second question. Cyclops is out. Scylla is a little too rough. Franceska and Betyl are too low-level; he'd be worried about them getting seriously hurt. They've been more reactive than aggressive... maybe what he needs isn't raw power so much as thoughtful strategy.]
I think I've got it.
[He takes Jellybean's ball from the strap across his chest and the Reuniclus bursts forth in a flash of light. If Elsa's seen a Reuniclus before then she'll note that this one has double the amount of ears and a somewhat strange face. Instead of the single line down the middle it has two and its eyes are spaced even further apart than normal; in the center is an odd little divot, like an eye socket that never finished forming. He's a special boy.]
We need to wear them down. They're too strong to attack head on; it will work better to tire them out so they drop on their own.
[So: two bulky boys who can take a beating and keep going. That's what they've got to work with.]
no subject
Then it sounds like Hnoss is going to be my best bet as well.
[She looks between Hnoss and Jellybean, feeling pretty confident in them, though there's fear bubbling up under the surface. Somewhere in all this chaos is Anna- she knows Anna can take care of herself, but of course her Big Sister Instincts™ are kicking in, not to mention-]
Ford? [Without really thinking about it, her hand is reaching out to grasp his. She opens her mouth to say something, but when she looks up at him, the words die off. She can't bring herself to voice any "what-ifs" right now, to consider any scenario where they don't make it out of this. Anyway, he knows. She doesn't need to say it. She squeezes his hand instead.] Let's kick some ass.
no subject
Boy is it still weird to have anyone touching his hands. Y'know, voluntarily.
It's the swearing that really gets his attention, though, before he can get too wrapped up in hand trauma. Probably for the best.]
Let's. I'm very ready to on your side for a battle instead of getting my teeth kicked in.
[See, it's funny, because she's actually pretty good at battling and has soundly thrashed him before now. He doesn't fancy the odds on those squid.]
Jellybean! Set up a Reflect.
[Jellybean does as he's told. The Nihilego stop, apparently a little ???? about the glowing barrier now shimmering faintly around Jellybean and his big green teammate. Just try and hit them with a physical move now, shitlords.]
no subject
It's not, but it's very intense.
His words do cause her to chuckle though, and her demeanor shifts back to a few moments prior as she puts on her battle face again.]
A change of pace is always refreshing, hm? Hnoss, use Thunderwave!
[Hnoss sets off, and somewhere from above a small lightning bolt strikes down on one of the Nihilego, vastly hindering its ability to move.]
Now focus on using Dragon Rage to whittle it down!
[Insert colorful description of Dragon Rage here]
no subject
Of course, with the presumed level discrepancy Dragon Rage is probably the smartest bet. Guaranteed damage is never something to sneeze at. Ford can appreciate the straightforward approach.]
Light Screen. [Jellybean wobbles an ear to show he's heard the command and sets up another barrier over the first. Cyclops is nearly twenty levels above Jellybean and Ford saw it gets its ghosty ass handed to it, so he's taking no chances here. Now they're shielded against almost every attack those squid could possibly throw at them.]
Now see what you can do with a Shadow Ball.
[The glowing mass of purple and black energy beings to form not between Jellybean's hands but at the little divot in his forehead where an eye isn't. Much of his stronger attacks localize there, Ford has noticed. Just one more of his quirks.]
Does Hnoss know anything that might push them back? Once they're weak and can only put up minimal resistance we may be able to herd them back into that portal.
no subject
This strategy hasn't failed her yet, so she thinks it'll help out even more here- though she is a little tense when a tentacle comes at Hnoss, though he manages to grab onto it and use the momentum to his advantage and toss the Nihilego a ways away.
Good boy.]
Hnoss, that was really great!
[When Ford speaks, she immediately knows what strategy to use next.]
I know exactly what to do! Hnoss, start using Twister to help drive them back!
[There goes the boy, off to play Twister.
He nyooms and darts around, strategically creating twisters to A, keep them from trying to get near his trainers and B, to move them back.]
