[There's a slightly wry smile as he says it. Not mocking. Just amused. He settles back at the controls, casually adjusting things on occasion. Like someone driving a truck on the highway.]
How to fly? [He glances away from the instruments, and grins.] I trained back in my world. I was a pilot - and an explorer.
[Fellow Dashing Stranger, this is an understatement. He studied his entire life for this kind of thing.]
no subject
[What do you call a train station for ships]
Flying station?
[He is well aware that there is a near-zero chance he doesn't sound like a complete fool, but he doesn't particularly care.]
[Right now, talking about literally anything but the horrifying distance between them and The Ground is good.]

[If there's a reaction to the term 'flying station', Shiro doesn't show it. He's been here long enough not to judge. His fellow Beefy Man is obviously from somewhere without anything in the air like a plane, or a ship.]
[So ... if that's true, then who is he to judge? That's just wrong.]
I was hoping I'd get to fly again. And - well. Then you and the Donphan showed up. So I kind of owe you one.
[See, he's hilarious.]

Call it even.
[Only... Hm.]
You don't suppose the Jenny's will take notice, do you?
[He's trying VERY HARD to not draw attention to himself in that regard. But shit seems a little too much hitting the fan for that particular shoe to drop.]
no subject
[If his Fellow Beef wants this to be even, then it's even. There's several moments of silence, before... well.]
[Shiro's already pale face blanches more.]
... Uh.
I - hope not?
no subject
[He has absolutely no idea if that is true or not, but the thought is a comfort. He doesn't want to draw that kind of attention to himself, he really doesn't.]
[Then, a touch quieter as though the answer might be a secret, or at the very least one that Scar is hesitant to hear:]
How do we get down?
no subject
[It's only fair! His new friend here was just escaping from angry Pokemon.]
[For the question, though, he has a reassuring smile.] I'll land us in Goldenrod. They've got to have a port like the one we left. And if not, I can land us in a field.
I've done both before - a lot of times.
no subject
What should I call you?
[Evidence of his recent attempts at being something of a participant in society. Scar prefers to dodge this question because it's always reversed back to him, but he owes his rescuer this courtesy.]
no subject
Shiro - nice to meet you...?
[The little trail off there is a prompt. What's your name, new beefy friend? He'd offer a hand, but he figures that might be more anxiety inducing, and keeps his hands on the controls. Not that he needs to keep them there. But still.]
no subject
[Shiro...]
[OH.]
[Oh...]
[Hm.]
[Scar goes on what could pass for a face journey with his Impenetrable Frowning Facade, but he doesn't actually comment on it. Narrowed eyes at the vague familiarity, recognition after having heard the name in passing, a flashing sidebar ad that reads PSYCHOLOGISTS HATE HER now that he has a jarringly familiar face to put to the name of his wife's best friend...]
[But there isn't really a way to voice all of that, is there? And speaking of names, he doesn't even like using the one everyone knows her by. There just... isn't a good way to mention it.]
[So he doesn't.]
Most call me Scar.
[Because that, too, is easier than telling a kind stranger that he doesn't have one and that he generally doesn't care what he's called, anymore.]
no subject
[Or, something like a name.]
Noted. [There's a little grin there. He doesn't need to ask why. It'd be like asking him why he was called that. You know, if - that were his nickname.]
Have you been here for a while? Or... just the weekend?
no subject
I was here several years ago. Returned only recently.
[A pause just a breath longer than it ought to be,]
You?
no subject
[The curiosity in Shiro's expression turns to something more somber. He gets it. That's all that really needs to be said, isn't it? He glances over, his smile tempered with sympathy.]
Well. Welcome back. Sorry your welcome included robot Donphans.
[Him though?] Long time. I think I've lost track of the exact number.
no subject
[It's hard to keep himself from counting every second, minute, and hour as they go by. It's hard to close his eyes at night when he has no choice but to wonder if seven years will disappear again.]
[A bit quieter:]
Very lucky.
[Scar watches Shiro through the corner of his eye. He speaks up when his dashing rescuer talks about the length of his own time here.]
For better or for worse?
no subject
I understand. [Completely.] And... well. For me it's been... it's been a mixed bag.
Good and bad. But I'm here, and I've got to make the best of it.
