"I do want to learn new things, but I kind of want to practice the old ones first before I go experimenting..." Claude absently chews on his lip as he looks over the bows. Finally, he chooses a more traditional wooden bow, picking it up to test the draw. "I'm already rusty, so I think the new bows will have to wait until I get back to where I should be. I don't want to get the wrong impression of them just because I'm out of practice in general."

"Sensible." Felix chooses an ordinary wooden bow as well, testing a few until he finds one with a draw that's comfortable for him. Then he shoulders a quiver from the rack and turns back to Claude. "Ready?"
vrdantwind: (Come follow me)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-03-28 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Ready?" Claude laughs. "Do you know how long I've been waiting for this?"

And there's no doubt about it - Claude's been missing his bow, being able to practice, just being able to have his favored weapon in his hands. Some of his more recent memories with a bow haven't been good ones; having to kill people in war might be a necessity, but he always hates it. But those aren't the bulk of his associations with his bow, and he's not killing anyone today. He's not even training for future battles. He's just shooting for fun, and it feels great.

The time flies. And so does Claude, at points, obtaining some rather baffled permission from the range staff to do flying shots. It certainly makes him stand out, and he draws more than a few compliments on his aim and technique. Surprisingly, no one tries to imitate his feats themselves...especially not the new one he tries out that might have even Felix's heart in his throat. Claude's never tried leaping between mounts in midair while shooting before, mostly because there's only one Mori he'd trust to catch him back home. But here, he's been training with Blitz and Arbiter specifically for this sort of thing, just for the thrill and challenge of it; now that he's got a bow in hand, of course he wants to try shooting while doing it. The shots made this way aren't very accurate, for him, but he assures Blitz and Arbiter that with practice they'll get it.

After all that, though, Claude declares himself done for the day. It's certainly a workout, doing the stunts he does, but also they've been at it awhile by this point. They should go do other things, like eat. And, possibly, get yelled at by Felix, if Felix thinks Claude's newest tricks are way too reckless.

Is it a desire for privacy, preoccupation, fuming too much to formulate words, or Felix not actually being angry at all that keeps Felix quiet long enough for them to get out of the archery club and onto the open street? Claude's likely to find out any second.

Usually, training with a bow is fine. It's an interesting challenge, one very different from Felix's usual, and he likes the gratification of being able to visibly see his improvements even without an opponent. But he finds ranged combat fairly boring, and he's not the biggest fan of shooting outdoors because it adds so many factors to take into account--whether the arrow will land somewhere irretrievable, random sounds breaking his concentration, and of course the wind. He suspects all the tedious on-the-fly calculation necessary to fire with accuracy when wind is involved is as thrilling to Claude as it is annoying to Felix.

Today, though, he's enjoying archery a lot more than usual. It's not just because watching Claude shoot is mesmerizing, although that's certainly part of it. Felix also finds a thrill in challenging himself to try to surpass his best with Claude watching him. It's not, he tells himself, a desire to impress Claude. It's a way of pushing himself in the presence of a master archer, just as Byleth and Geralt inspire him to push himself. (But secretly, it is also a desire to impress Claude.)

Once his lover takes to the sky, though, Felix puts down the bow in favor of his Gear so that he can take pictures and video of the spectacle that is Claude von Riegan. Now that he's not in the midst of battle or focusing on his own training, he can fully appreciate the immense skill it takes to do all this nonsense, even in ways Felix hadn't considered before. Like the fact that when Claude shoots mid-leap, there's a split second at the apex of it where he almost hangs in the air, and he fires in that split second--which means minimizing any movement that could affect his accuracy, both from falling and from the turbulence of his mount.

So it's not just showing off and mind games, after all, huh? Goddess, he's so fucking brilliant. Is there anything he couldn't excel at if he tried?

But there comes a moment, while he's in the middle of filming, when Claude does something Felix has never seen him do before, not even at Gronder. It's so ludicrous that at first Felix thinks something must be wrong with one of the Pokemon--why else would Claude be doing this? But no, he's just...ratcheting up the stakes because he feels like it. Anyone watching the video later will be able to clearly hear Felix say "what the fuck" in that moment.

When Claude finally comes down and they go to return their gear, Felix is scowling, but he doesn't say a word. Not here in a wide open place, where anyone could hear and watch them. No, he waits until they've left the community center behind before he stops walking and turns on Claude with a finger jabbing into his chest.

"You idiot. You incredible bastard. Challenging yourself is one thing, but you could have fallen to your death."
vrdantwind: (Keep my head up above the water)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-04-06 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Claude - who's been doing a very Sylvain-esque relaxed walk, arms folded behind his head, very much like a Sylvain who doesn't know Felix is mad yet and is about to find out - stops short at that finger jab, looking genuinely surprised. All the more so because...Felix's complaint doesn't make any sense to him.

"I mean...I could fall to my death anytime I fly, sunshine." He blinks bemusedly at Felix. "And I have practiced that with Arbiter and Blitz before, you know - close to the ground, so it wouldn't be dangerous. I'm not crazy enough to try a trick like that up high, without ever trying it before...I mean, this was the first time I had a bow or tried to shoot while doing it, but that's the only part that was new."

[personal profile] bestswordmaster 2021-04-06 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
"That's exactly my point. Don't pretend you don't know how much more complicated bringing a ranged weapon into something like that makes it. The other nonsense you pull, you've done with a bow before. That was new. What was I supposed to do if you fell, you nitwit?"

Felix jabs him with his finger again to make sure his point is made.
vrdantwind: (We'll take tomorrow)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-04-07 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I mean, it certainly complicates what I'm doing, but you're over-estimating how much of my jumping between Arbiter and Blitz is actually me. Most of the work of catching me is done by them, and they weren't any more distracted by my having a bow in hand than they'd ever been doing those maneuvers before." Claude shrugs. "Anyway, I've done a lot of practice with them - it was the next best thing to being able to practice archery up until now - and I trust them completely. They'd never have let me fall to begin with."

He cocks an eyebrow at Felix. "That said, while I'm taking absolutely every precaution not to fall, and I'm confident I won't...it's not like we can die here anyway. You do know that, right?" It...occurs to Claude that he doesn't know if Felix knows that. "The risk is less than you're making it out to be. I might as well worry about you accidentally taking a lethal blow to the head during your sparring sessions."

Felix blinks at him, then blinks at him again.

"...Excuse me?"
vrdantwind: (Keep my head up above the water)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-04-17 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
Claude blinks. "...wait, had you not heard about that yet?"

[personal profile] bestswordmaster 2021-04-18 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
"What the hell makes you think I would have heard that we can't die?" He narrows his eyes. "If this is some kind of joke, it's not funny."
vrdantwind: (What could you be afraid of)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-04-22 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"As far as I know, it's not a joke, and I've heard it confirmed from more than one source." Claude shrugs. "Steven was the first to mention it to me - apparently, when those of us who came here from other worlds go through something that kills us, we abruptly wake up unharmed at the nearest pokémon center as though nothing had happened. So I guess maybe it's not accurate to say we can't die, so much as if we do, we're instantly resurrected? But apparently it's happened and been confirmed here, and it seems like the strangest thing in the world to lie about. Definitely the strangest thing for multiple people to lie about, in such a specific way."
bestswordmaster: (postskip stfu sylvain)

[personal profile] bestswordmaster 2021-04-23 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
"That...that makes no sense!" Even Felix himself isn't sure why he's fuming about this. Other than - "The dead can't be resurrected. People die and they don't come back."

A strange thought hits him, then, and his rant ends prematurely and abruptly as he glances away. "But you believe it, so I believe it. But...doesn't that strike you as the kind of thing that happens in dreams?"
vrdantwind: (But never dreamed)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2021-04-30 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Shit. For a second, Claude feels like an idiot for not seeing this reaction coming, but that's just the amount of time for him to react. He steps forward, hands moving to lightly grip Felix's arms, voice going soft. "Oh, sunshine. Of course that'd feel like a perverse idea." He doesn't say 'after what you've been through', but it doesn't really need to be said. People who've lost so deeply, so personally, to death the way that Felix has - the way Dimitri has, for that matter; Claude's going to have to approach this subject carefully with him too - would find death being some easily reversible, impermanent thing here to be almost a sick mockery of what it's really like. What it's like elsewhere. "And I admit, I don't know how it works. Maybe it's not even that people die, exactly, so much as they're prevented from dying. All I know is that, apparently, those of us from other worlds are at even less risk of dying here than you might think. And that's ultimately a good thing, right?"

He pauses, then adds, "But you're right in that it doesn't feel like it could be real. I'm not going to stand here and pretend like it makes sense. In a weird way, that's part of the reason I believe it - it's as crazy as everything else about being here is. But also, I've heard it from multiple sources, and several of them are ones I don't think have any reason to lie to me. Or at all, really."
bestswordmaster: (postskip i do not see it)

A kneejerk reaction of disgust boils up from somewhere in Felix's chest, the familiar furious defiance that makes his hackles rise, makes him want to shove away what part of him perceives as pity in the sudden surge of emotions going through him like a storm. He shoves it back down, swallowing and training his eyes on some spot over Claude's shoulder. He rests his hands on the other man's waist in an attempt at showing somehow that he's not angry. Not with Claude, anyway.

"It's perverse either way. But..." He nods. "If we're all at less risk, then...yes. That's good." His gaze shifts back up to Claude's face and he frowns. "But that doesn't mean I want to watch you fall and break your neck, you reckless buffoon. So just..." He huffs a breath out through his nose. "Just warn me next time."

Claude laughs softly. "You sound like you're scolding Sylvain," he says with a smile. "Listen, I know I like doing risky things sometimes, but I promise I wouldn't do anything that was likely to kill me. Especially not in front of someone I love. Have some faith in my skill as a rider, okay?" He leans in to peck the tip of Felix's nose. "But I can promise not to spring that kind of thing on you again without warning, at least. Not that I think I have any other flying tricks you haven't already seen besides that one."

"Well, you're both reckless buffoons," Felix grumbles. His face scrunches up and he leans back a little at this cutesy...thing Claude is doing.

"Hmph. Yet. I'm sure you'll come up with some soon enough. But good." He pulls his hands back and turns to start walking again. "I recorded it. So we can show it to Dimitri and the others."
